Climate & Weather
Costa Rica runs on two seasons: a dry season from roughly December through April, and a green (rainy) season the rest of the year, when afternoon showers are common but mornings are often clear. Temperatures stay warm and fairly consistent year-round, with cooler temps in the mountain and cloud forest regions.
Hawaii has a milder, more consistent climate overall, with a slightly drier season from April to October and a wetter season from November to March. Trade winds keep most of the islands comfortable, though windward coasts see more rain than leeward resort areas.

Each island has its own personality, from Oahu’s resorts and city energy to the Big Island’s volcanoes and Kauai’s dramatic coastline, but the pace tends to be a bit more relaxed than Costa Rica’s adventure-heavy itineraries.
Distance & Flight Time
From most of the US, Costa Rica is a 3-6 hour flight, and no passport wait is required since US citizens do need a passport but not a visa for short stays. It is closer to the East Coast than Hawaii is.
Hawaii is domestic US travel, so no passport is required, but it is a longer flight for most travelers: 5-6 hours from the West Coast and 10+ hours with a connection from the East Coast.
Price
Costa Rica tends to be the more budget-friendly option overall, especially outside of peak dry-season weeks. Eco-lodges, mid-range hotels, and local restaurants can keep daily costs well below a typical Hawaii trip, though the most exclusive rainforest and beach resorts can rival Hawaii’s top end.
Hawaii is generally the pricier destination, particularly for lodging, rental cars, and dining, since almost everything on the islands is shipped in. Resort fees and parking charges also add up quickly at many hotels.

Traveling with young kids or want the absolute least complicated logistics? Hawaii’s domestic flights and English-speaking, dollar-based infrastructure make it the lower-stress option. Traveling as a couple or with older kids who want adventure? Costa Rica delivers more variety per day.
