Florida is one of the most-visited states in the US, and for good reason — it packs theme parks, beaches, the Everglades and lively cities into one drivable itinerary, with warm weather for most of the year.

But “Florida vacation” can mean very different trips depending on which region you choose. This guide covers the best places to visit, how long to stay, when to go and what to consider when planning your Florida vacation.

Best Places to Visit in Florida

Orlando

Home to Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando and SeaWorld, Orlando is the theme park capital of the world and a natural fit for family vacations of any size.

Best for: Families, theme parks and multigenerational trips
Recommended stay: 5–7 nights

Miami & Miami Beach

Miami combines Art Deco architecture, Cuban culture, nightlife and beach clubs with easy access to the Florida Keys and cruise ports.

Best for: Nightlife, culture, couples and cruise departures
Recommended stay: 3–4 nights

The Florida Keys

A scenic drive strung across island after island, the Keys offer diving, fishing, laid-back island time and Key West’s famous sunsets at the southernmost point of the continental US.

Best for: Diving, fishing, road trips and couples
Recommended stay: 3–5 nights

Gulf Coast (Naples, Sarasota, Clearwater)

The Gulf Coast is known for calmer water and some of the best white-sand beaches in the state, with a generally quieter, more relaxed feel than the Atlantic side.

Best for: Beaches, relaxation and families
Recommended stay: 4–6 nights

When Is the Best Time to Visit Florida?

Florida’s high season runs roughly December through April, with pleasant, dry weather and the biggest crowds and prices, especially around the theme parks over holidays.

Summer brings heat, humidity and afternoon thunderstorms, plus the tail end of hurricane season runs June through November — worth keeping in mind, especially for coastal trips in late summer and fall.

How Long Should You Spend in Florida?

For a single-region trip (Orlando theme parks, or a Gulf Coast beach stay), 5–7 days works well.

Combining regions — Orlando plus a beach stay, or Miami plus the Keys — works best with 10–14 days, since Florida’s distances are longer than they look on a map.

Getting Around Florida

A rental car is close to essential outside of the Orlando theme park resorts, since regions are spread far apart and public transit is limited.

Orlando itself has extensive resort shuttle and rideshare options if you’re staying at a theme park hotel and not planning to venture far.

Is Florida Good for Families?

Yes — Florida is one of the best family destinations in the US, led by Orlando’s theme parks but also including beaches, wildlife encounters and the Everglades.

Is Florida Good for Couples?

Definitely — Miami’s nightlife, the Keys’ romantic island atmosphere and the Gulf Coast’s quiet beaches all offer strong options for couples’ getaways.

What Kind of Traveler Will Love Florida?

  • Families with kids of theme-park age
  • Beach lovers
  • Couples wanting nightlife or island quiet
  • Cruise passengers extending a trip
  • Multigenerational groups
