Planning a trip to Paris? Discover the best areas to visit, when to go, how long to stay, getting around, and what to consider when planning your trip.
By Vacation Intel
Paris pairs some of the world’s most iconic landmarks with a genuinely walkable, cafe-lined city center — the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre and Notre-Dame all within a compact, easily navigable area.
This guide covers the best areas to visit, how long to stay, when to go and what to consider when planning your Paris vacation.
Best Areas to Visit in Paris
Le Marais
A trendy, historic neighborhood with boutique shopping, art galleries and some of the city’s best falafel and pastries, all on charming cobblestone streets.
Best for: A central, walkable base with local character
Recommended stay: 3–4 nights
Saint-Germain-des-Prés
Home to historic literary cafes, the Luxembourg Gardens and easy access to the Louvre and Musée d’Orsay — a classic, elegant Left Bank base.
Best for: Art lovers and a refined atmosphere
Recommended stay: 2–3 nights
Montmartre
A hilltop artist’s quarter with the Sacré-Cœur basilica, cobblestone streets and sweeping views over the city — one of the most atmospheric parts of Paris.
Best for: Views, art history and a bohemian feel
Recommended stay: 1–2 nights, or a day visit
When Is the Best Time to Visit Paris?
April, May, September and October offer mild, comfortable weather and generally smaller crowds than peak summer.
Many Parisians leave the city in August, meaning some smaller restaurants and shops close, though major attractions stay open.
How Long Should You Spend in Paris?
4–5 days is enough to see the Eiffel Tower, Louvre and Notre-Dame area, plus time to simply wander a neighborhood or two.
Paris also works well as a day-trip base for Versailles, or as a stop on a longer France or Europe itinerary.
Getting Around Paris
The Metro is extensive, efficient and covers the entire city — a rental car isn’t practical given traffic and limited parking in central Paris.
Many neighborhoods are also highly walkable, making it easy to combine Metro rides with walking tours.
Is Paris Good for Families?
Yes — the Eiffel Tower, Luxembourg Gardens and Disneyland Paris just outside the city all work well for families with kids of most ages.
Is Paris Good for Couples?
Yes — Paris is one of the most romantic cities in the world, with Seine river walks, sunset views from Montmartre and countless intimate bistros.
